News breaks around the world every single day, but keeping track of it all is tough.

Whether it’s real-time sentiment around political unrest or assessing aid needed in the wake of a natural disaster, everyone from humanitarian organizations to companies investing abroad can benefit from a deeper understanding of what’s happening around them.

On-demand data, collected remotely by Premise, can be a key conduit to make better-informed decisions from afar. Where to surge resources, how to evaluate success or protect investments all come down to knowing what’s actually happening and how people are feeling about it.

Gaining insight as the news breaks

Traditionally, during a conflict, disaster, or period of unrest, organizations and companies rely on news reports or anecdotes from the ground to make decisions. This void, between what a small number of key informants describe and what’s really happening, can force decision making based on outdated or incomplete information, disrupting business and/or lessening an organization’s impact.

The rapid data collection Premise performs can help bridge this information gap and quickly deliver data to bolster decision making. In many cases, Premise can collect a statistically significant sample of respondents in days, if not hours, allowing for near-real time situational assessments.

In the past year, Premise has scaled up its ‘Tracking Global Events’ initiative, collecting rapid response sentiment and observational data from its network of over five million Contributors in over 144 countries. From unrest around skyrocketing wheat prices in global commodity markets to mapping the aftermath of floods in Nigeria, Premise has used this model to provide an array of actionable insights.

Hear from real people on the ground in hard to reach places

Collecting quality data from on the ground in rural and hard-to-reach areas is a major challenge: hiring and training enumerators is costly and time-consuming, while computer assistance telephone interviews are limited in complexity and reach.

Premise was built on the back of the smartphone and internet revolution, which has dramatically increased our ability to connect and gather information. In 2022, the global smartphone penetration rate was estimated to be 83%, and with Premise’s combination of creative, community-built interventions that focus on building trust with the communities we work in, we are growing and retaining networks even in the hardest-to-reach and rural parts of the world.

We can also aid our customers in gathering insights from fragile and conflict-affected areas. In the spring of 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) used Premise to launch a household health needs assessment in Ukraine. Using Premise, the WHO was able to quickly understand that of those seeking healthcare services, 33% reported having difficulty getting the services due to security, availability of services, and cost.

Our ability to reach those even in the most rural, hard-to-reach, and fragile contexts gives Premise customers a unique ability to understand what’s really happening on the ground almost anywhere in the world—and quickly.
