Our tool set consists of a development tool, the Diagnostic Profiler, and a run-time tool, the Diagnostician. Together these tools implement a new paradigm in diagnostics: model-based reasoning and provide a concurrent engineering framework for diagnostics development.
Our run-time software, the Diagnostician, is what really sets us apart from other tools. The Diagnostician reads test results and provides a diagnostic call-out. The Diagnostician can be applied to test programs on a broad range of test systems, diagnostics embedded into interactive electronic technical manuals in a portable maintenance aid environment, and embedded diagnostics, hosted on both embedded computers and micro-controllers. The Diagnostician performs fault isolation by correlating test results to a diagnostic model of the item which is derived from CAD data (edif netlists) using our development system, the Diagnostic Profiler. Use of the Diagnostician will allow you to write much less complicated test software, because all of the diagnostic logic which is normally "hard- coded" into the test program (as "IF...THEN" and "GO-TO" branching logic) is contained in the diagnostic knowledge base. It's a relatively simple process, and provides you with a comprehensive fault isolation capability without reliance on and coding of diagnostic logic and flow charts. The resulting diagnostic capability is better because it's dynamic: it's not restricted to a pre-defined set of decision paths. The Diagnostician reads test data from and source, in any order, and can comprehend as many or as few test results at a time as the test environment can send it.
Since the Diagnostic Profiler also performs testability analysis and provides visibility of test and diagnostics issues up-front, it also provides an overall concurrent engineering framework.
The Diagnostician software itself is a library of functions in a Dynamic Link Library (DLL). It is a true diagnostic "server" that provides diagnostic services to any program requesting it's services. That program may be a test executive, test programs, LabVIEW, LabWindows, ATEasy, HP-VEE, an AIMSS Interactive Electronic Technical Manual, or any independent program. For example, In LabVIEW, our DLL functions have been combined into a series of virtual instruments, or subVI's, that can be easily called and integrated into an applications program.
We have developed a very robust approach to dynamic reconfiguration management using an "adaptive" model, for embedded applications.
In the IETM area, the Diagnostician is attractive because is eliminates cumbersome fault trees associated with troubleshooting procedures. Rather than static troubleshooting trees, the model serves as the basis for a dynamic diagnostic reasoning capability. Authoring and maintenance of the IETM software is significantly simplified, and the resulting diagnostics is better and more efficient. Also, there is a feature that we call a "Run-Time Smartener" which takes the results of logged maintenance session data (produced by the Diagnostician) and updates the knowledge base and reasoning with actual field failure rate data, so the overall process continues to mature over time.
